Hotels and Guesthouses of Greater Male’ Area to Resume Operations from December 14

Hotels and Guesthouses of Capital Male City has been announced to be reopened from 14th December 2020. Minister of Tourism Abdulla Mausoom revealed via Twitter that Greater Male’ area hotels and guesthouses will be permitted to resume operations starting from December 14, 2020.  

He further mentioned that guests will be required to undergo a 72 hour exit PCR test for safety precautions in order to stay at these tourist establishments.  

On October 15, 2020, Kaani Beach Hotel of K. Maafushi welcomed the very first guesthouse visitors to the Maldives with permit approved by the Government to host international travelers at the guesthouses. Upon invitation by Maafushi Council, Minister Abdulla Mausoom was in attendance to extend greetings to the first arrivals since border reopening. 

A number of guesthouses are currently in operation across the country. All guesthouses work in line with the safe tourism guidelines as per the Ministry of Tourism and the local Health Protection Agency. Wearing masks is mandatory in public places for locals as well as tourists at all tourist guesthouse islands. Tourists are not allowed to enter or stay in residential houses, but they are allowed to use public cafes, restaurants and shops which follow the COVID-19 preventative measures.  

There is no quarantine on arrival but all tourists are required to fill an online health declaration form within 24 hours prior to departure and submit a negative COVID-19 PCR test result, conducted maximum 96 hours prior to departure to Maldives. 

“Split-stay” is allowed between all tourist establishments with prior approval taken from the Ministry of Tourism. However, tourists are not allowed to travel from a tourist guesthouse island to a non-tourist guesthouse island.
