Sun Siyam Iru Fushi recently celebrated its annual Eco Week – Celebrating Our Planet, a vibrant initiative dedicated to raising environmental awareness and promoting sustainability. Guests and resort team members came together to commemorate World Reef Awareness Day, World Environment Day, and World Ocean Day through a variety of immersive and inspiring activities.
The week commenced with a guided conservation snorkelling tour and reef clean-up, led by the resort’s resident Marine Biologist. This offered guests the opportunity to explore the island’s vibrant house reef while contributing to its preservation. On World Environment Day, participants engaged in a meaningful tree-planting session followed by a nature walk through the island’s lush tropical trails.
World Ocean Day was marked by hands-on coral planting at Waters Edge Beach, allowing guests to actively contribute to the resort’s ongoing reef restoration efforts. In the evening, an open-air screening of a powerful documentary about coral reefs was held under the stars, enhancing awareness of marine ecosystems and the urgent need for conservation. The day concluded with a magical night snorkelling adventure, showcasing the hidden wonders of the reef after dark.
Eco Week reflected Sun Siyam Iru Fushi’s unwavering commitment to sustainability through the Sun Siyam Cares initiative. The program is designed to offer meaningful experiences that inspire guests to connect with nature and contribute to environmental protection.
As part of its broader sustainability efforts, the resort has launched coral restoration projects, regular reef clean-ups, island-wide tree planting initiatives, and educational programs for guests. In 2025, the resort has successfully planted 126 trees and installed 18 coral frames in its lagoon. To reduce single-use plastics, Sun Siyam Iru Fushi has transitioned to glass water bottles and established an in-house bottling plant. The resort also engages with local communities by supporting nearby schools and hosting environmental awareness sessions, reinforcing its dedication to both nature and people.
Sun Siyam Resorts remains firmly committed to sustainable and responsible operations across its properties in the Maldives and Sri Lanka. Through the Sun Siyam Cares programme, the group continues to focus on reducing energy and water usage, minimizing plastic waste, supporting local communities, and investing in renewable energy. The initiative also advocates for conservation and the preservation of local heritage to reduce environmental impact while enhancing socio-economic well-being.
