India has been noted as the top market to Maldives in the year 2020. India climbed up the market list surpassing Russia and Italy, who previously held the record in the top two ranks.

According to the statistical reports released by Ministry of Tourism, at the end of November 2020, Russia was ranked top market, Italy 2nd and India as 3rd, all recording tourist arrivals in the range of 44,000 – 47,000.

At the end of December, India took over as top market with almost 63,000 tourist arrivals while Russia came second with 61,388 arrivals and United Kingdom rising to 3rd place with over 52,000 arrivals, exceeding Italy’s.

Last year, several Bollywood celebrities have visited the Maldives including Sophie Choudry, Tiger Shroff, Katrina Kaif, Hina Khan and Vedhika Kumar. Some others including Kiara Advani and Ananya Panday have spent New Year’s with a full-on tropical vibe in the Maldives as well.

The gradual growth of Maldives tourism since borders reopened on July 15, 2020, is picking up speed as the destination continues to offer the best of ‘Sunny Side of Life’ for visitors, especially during this holiday season. The country welcomed over 10,000 international visitors in the first three days of January 2021.

The new year started off with the launching of Maldives Border Miles loyalty program. Tourists can now register on the program and start earning points by travelling to Maldives from January 1, 2021 onwards. A registered member will earn points based on the duration of stay, visits to celebrate special occasions, visits on local occasions of Maldives, frequency of visits, and other aspects.

The lucky first visitor to the Maldives was granted the first Maldives Border Miles loyalty card (Aida, Bronze tier), which entitled him to countless benefits and rewards with each border crossing.

Maldives remains one of the safest and most preferred tourist destinations. After the reopening of borders in July 2020, Maldives successfully received over 550,000 tourists in the year 2020.
