On Tuesday (18 May 2021), Ministry of Tourism has met with the recently appointed city/atoll council mayors and presidents to introduce new community-based project, ‘Tourism Diversification and Localization Project’.

According to the Ministry, they will be working together with the council members to promote community-based tourism across the islands and ensures its benefits will be received by the people through direct means.

Despite the domination of high-end resorts in the Maldives, Ministry of Tourism has been pushing for the development of local tourism over the years since guesthouses were permitted for operations in 2009. So far, local island tourism has been one of the fastest growing sectors of the Maldives tourism industry.

However, the cooperation of all local island leaders is required for further expansion of community-based tourism development in the Maldives.

Minister of Tourism, Dr Abdulla Mausoom acknowledged the support of Atoll/City councils who participated in the meeting and said in a tweet, “Inspired. Appreciate the enthusiasm shown by the City Council Mayors and Atoll Council Presidents towards community-based tourism development in Maldives. Together we can. Insha Allah we will.”
