The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of the “Chevening / Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) Scholarships'' partnership between the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) and the British High Commission took place today at Maagiri Hotel. The British High Commissioner to Maldives, HE Caron Röhsler signed on behalf of the British High Commission and the Secretary General, Mr. Ahmed Nazeer signed on behalf of MATI.

The Chevening Scholarships programme is the UK Government’s global scholarship programme, by which scholarships are awarded to those individuals with strong academic backgrounds who can also demonstrate their leadership potential.

The “Chevening/Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) Scholarships” are for Maldivian students wishing to study for a one-year Master’s degree in a Travel and Tourism related programme at any accredited university in the UK. The partnership is set to cover two scholarships over the course of two academic years - 2022/23 and 2023/24.

Speaking at the ceremony, HE Caron Röhsler said that it is important for the industry to remain sustainable with the natural infrastructures and the nature, enabling the majority of locals to benefit directly from the great wealth it brings. “I hope that in the next generation of pioneers that are being invested through this partnership, they will be able to help find us the right way to do this; sustainable tourism that is kind to the environment and kind to the people of Maldives, just as kind and generous the people of Maldives are when they welcome tourists from across the world.” She further added, “This partnership contributes to sustainable growth and wealth of the Maldives and we look forward to investing in partnerships between the UK and the Maldives.

Mr. Ahmed Nazeer said, “I hope that the initiative we have taken to be part of this scholarship will be introducing similar talented people from our community to serve for the future and if it can be attained, MATI’s goals set with the scholarship scheme will be achieved. This is a great opportunity for those striving to rise in the industry along with a quality background in a field related to the industry. Hopefully, this is a start of such initiatives and in the future, MATI will continue to grow while giving back to the community.”

MATI intends to increase and enhance this program depending on the success of this inaugural initiative.
