The company from Netherlands known as Dutch Docklands has signed an agreement to for another floating islands project in the Maldives.
In Mohamed Nasheed's presidency during 2010, an agreement for the same project
was signed. That time, in order to incorporate floating island technology, five
islands within the Malé atoll were to be given to a company, for 50 years,
where both the Maldivian government and Dutch Docklands held shares. The
economic minister at the time Mohamed Rasheed, sighed on behalf of the
Maldives.
After not knowing what was happening with the
project, a UK media in the year 2015 announced that the project between the
company and Maldives would start on the 17th of August. But no statement was
issued by the Maldivian government.
The project was signed for on the 2nd of May
2019 at a special ceremony held at the Tourism Ministry. The tourism ministry's
state minister Dr. Ahmed Solih signed on behalf of the Maldives.
Any other details about the Dutch Docklands
project has yet to be revealed by the Tourism Ministry.
