The Foreign Ministries of Maldives and Germany have discussed
and come to a conclusion where both parties agree that there should be a
permanent office in the Maldives to issue Schengen Visa. Schengen
Visa is a necessary document for foreign passport holders to have in order to
travel to countries within the European Union.
This discussion took place on the Foreign Minister Abdulla
Shahids trip to Berlin for the 5th Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue,
between him and his German counterpart, Minister Heiko.
In this discussion, Minister Shahid revealed that the two
ministers spoke of ways to strengthen the bilateral relations between both countries.
Minister Shahid acknowledged and graciously thanked the European Union, as well
as Germany for their help in transitioning the government after President
Ibrahim Solih won the presidential election last year.
In addition to Minister Shaid, Maldivian ambassador to
Germany Ahmed Latheef, Deputy Ambassador Mohamed Jinah, and Ministers
counselor Shiruzimath Sameer also took part in the meeting.
This January, there were arrangements which were made in
order to issue Schengen Visa in the Maldives. Currently, Maldivians have to
travel to Colombo, Sri Lanka in order to obtain a Schengen Visa, however, EU
officials visit the Maldives from time to Time to issue the visa directly in Maldives.
Even now, there are many Maldivian students who study abroad in EU countries,
and many Maldivians who frequent EU countries on holiday.
