Tourism in the Maldives
is changing and so is the travellers understanding of what the Maldives has to
offer. Secret Paradise, a Maldives based tour company has helped to lead
this. Offering small group and private travel experiences, their unique local
island tours are designed to allow guests to engage with local people as well
as enjoy the activities for which the Maldives is renowned; diving, snorkeling,
watersports and sunset safaris.
Secret Paradise was
founded in 2012, when following 27 years in UK retail management, the
opportunity to relocate arose for their co-founder Ruth Franklin. Ruth was no
stranger to the Maldives having visited the archipelago on over 30 occasions.
Their focus of engaging travelers with locals was driven by Ruths own
experiences during her travels in the archipelago.
Travel with Secret
Paradise on any one of their range of tours and immerse yourself in the
Maldives, its culture, beliefs, and tradition. Travelling by public ferry
and staying on an inhabited island will provide you with unique opportunities
to engage with the local community. Share breakfast with a family in their
home. Learn to cook tasty Maldivian dishes. Watch and participate in local
craft lessons. Fish the traditional way with just a line and BBQ your catch on
the beach for a dinner under the stars. Exchange stories of Maldives past and
present or just sit back on a traditional Maldivian seat with your feet in the
ocean and watch the world go by.
Responsible
Tourism plays a very large part in what they do, supported by the fact that
Secret Paradise were longlisted for the World Responsible Travel Awards in
2015. They are mindful of ensuring local tourism is promoted in line with
Maldivian culture and beliefs and through education of both guests and locals
they aim to protect the environment and limit where ever possible any negative
impact to local life. Partnering with NGOs such as Save the Beach, Secret
Paradise tours allow guests to learn about the environment and the challenges
faced by the Maldives as well as having opportunity for guests to become actively
involved in projects. Secret Paradise don't just provide holidays they provide
experiences.
