GAM Raises Concerns on Home Stay Tourism & Meets with HEP to discuss on ways to expand Guesthouse businesses in Maldives

Guesthouse Association of Maldives (GAM) have raised concerns over the quick process of trying to implement Home Stay Tourism in Maldives. 

The association highlighted in a press release that the time to introduce Home Stay is not appropriate, as many across the island nation has invested in the guesthouse industry where everyone in small communities are connected directand indirectly through source of incomes. Whereas the COVID 19 pandemic has devastated all the income forecasted to repay the loans / recover the investments made to nearly a thousand guest houses across the nation.  While the government has only differed the utility bills and taxes, these small and medium size businesses are struggling to hold on with current staff, rent and other overheads.

GAM’s press release also mentioned about social issues which may araise due to living in small lands, congested population with extended families in the same house. 

The association recommends to further study and learn about the pros and cons prior to implementing any new segment.

To further discuss this matter, HEP Ibrahim Solih had a meeting with the officials of Guesthouse Association of Maldives (GAM) to expand and improve the Guesthouse business in the Maldives, and exchanged views to overcome the challenges faced due to COVID 19.
