The PCR COVID Testing lab at Maafaru airport, which was opened on July 11, 2020, was designed and constructed as per the World Health Organization, and Maldives’ Ministry of Health guidelines, under the supervision of ADK Hospitals, who have also managed the facility for the past six months.

Last week, the lab ceased service in order to expand and upgrade it so it can perform more tests per day. This upgrade has now been completed and the Ministry of Health recently inspected the lab, and go ahead has been given to operate the facility.

The laboratory is due to reopen on Saturday 6 February. It will be managed by local medical company Crystal Medicals.

The Soneva-funded COVID-19 testing centre uses the Roche Lifecycle 96 machine, and can process up to 700 tests per day. The testing centre was built in just 30 days and offers tourists and locals the ability to get a COVID-19 test result in less than 24 hours.
