Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced that
Velana International Airport (VIA) will be closed during the hours 2100 - 0600
of the next day for commercial operations effective from 28th March 2020.
According to MACL, during the 9-hour time frame, medical,
humanitarian and non-scheduled flights will be accommodated with 3 hours of
prior notice. This initiative is to be carried out till further notice.
Other measures taken by VIA includes the establishment of a COVID-19 Coordinating Center for internal operations, installment of temperature screening at departure terminals, arranging paid leave for all staff over 55 years of age and those pregnant in addition to staff with flu like symptoms.
On March 27th, President Mohamed Solih announced the halt of on-arrival Visa to Maldives amongst the many steps taken to contain and control the spread of COVID-19, global pandemic crisis. Since then, domestic airlines have also suffered heavy loss due to the fall in passengers numbers.
