Minister of Tourism, Ali Waheed has announced that Maldives
will be attempting to break the World Scuba Diving record next year.
At a press conference held prior to Minister Waheeds official trip to Spain, he informed that they plan to include World Scuba Diving record as part of "World Tourism Day 2020" celebrations, showcasing the longest human chain underwater scuba diving.
The new world record was mentioned while referring to the, 'free-diving world record' recently attempted at Baros Lagoon with 520 free-divers as part of World Tourism Day 2019 celebrations.
"This attempt will give us the opportunity to promote the
Maldives and showcase the beautiful marine life here. We intend to break the
current world record on the longest human chain underwater scuba diving by
re-creating this on World Tourism Day with locals and foreigners alike at one
of our mesmerizing islands."
As of now the world record for the longest human chain
underwater is held by Indonesia Womens Organization (WASI) in Manado,
North Sulawesi, Indonesia on 1 August 2019 with 578 people.
