Hurawalhi strongly believes that cutting down the amount of waste starts with reducing the amount generated in the first place, followed by reusing and re purposing, and recycling the rest. Across the entire resort, measures are taken to keep waste at a minimum, and our eco-conscious team are continuously on the lookout for ways to reduce the environmental footprint even more.
Many eco-aware practices and policies are in place on Hurawalhi island that reduce the burden on the environment (such as solar panels, LED
lights, ditching plastic water bottles and straws and much more find an
overview of how we practise sustainable luxury here), and also when it
comes to recycling what we cannot reduce or reuse, strict standards are
followed to ensure that the toll on nature is minimum.
The person in charge of Hurawalhis recycling is Priyantha, Chief Engineer, who has been an integral part of the team since the resorts opening in 2016, and is also entrused with the same role at our sister property Kudadoo Maldives Private Island. With a can do attitude, Priyantha and his team look after all recycling matters at our recycling center, where all cans and glass is processed before transported to a recycling facility in Male.
A partnership Hurawalhi particularly proud of is also that with the Maldives branch of Parley for the
Oceans that advocate the avoiding the use of single-use plastics and
encourage responsible disposal of the plastics that cannot be ditched. Whenever
possible, Hurawalhi follow Parleys guidelines of avoiding, intercepting before
plastics ends up in landfills and the ocean, and redesigning and putting it
into circular economy. Priyantha and his team prepare recyclable waste as well
as any plastic debris washed onto our beaches, and coordinates with Parley to
ensure that it is treated as environmentally responsible as possible.
