Velassaru Maldives Releases Rescued Hawksbill Turtle

A rescued Hawksbill turtle has been released back into the wild by Velassaru Maldives Resort.


The hawksbill turtle was caught in an abandoned fishing net near one of the overwater rooms before it was rescued by one of the resorts Housekeeping staff members. The turtle was immediately cut free and taken under the care of the resorts resident marine biologist Henriette Krebs at Immersion, Glide & Wet lab.


The resort released the turtle on Sunday, 22nd April, which also marked the celebration of  Earth Day.


"It was amazing to see how it paddled around the shallow lagoon waters of Velassaru Maldives for a while before making its way slowly towards the open sea." Reads a statement by the resort.


"We hope that sharing this story will increase awareness and help reduce the impact of litter on sea turtles."




Velassaru which means 'turtle island offers guests luxurious beachfront and overwater accommodation with uninterrupted ocean views. The contemporary-styled villas and bungalows offer chic serenity, featuring wooden ceilings and floors for a tropical atmosphere.

Velassaru Maldives is located in South Male Atoll and accessible by a short 25-minute speedboat ride from the main Velana International Airport.
