Asphalt Layer Work For New Runway Commence at Velana International Airport

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced that asphalt works has begun on the new runway  at Velana International Airport (VIA)


According MACL, 80 mm of AC25 Asphalt will be laid as the first layer of asphalt For the new code-F runway. Furthermore, 2 various grades of asphalt layers will be laid later to complete the total runway. 


Works will be done on the 60meters wide runway with daily average of 100 to 130 meters stretch per day to complete the 3400 meters of runway, linking taxi ways to the present runway during the course of the works. The new runway has already undergone 4 different types of base layers prior to the asphalt layer.


This historical milestone was witnessed by the senior management of Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL) and Managing Director of MACL Mr. Adil Moosa briefed media that the new runway project will be completed during the last quarter of 2018.


Maldives Airports Company is the operator of Velana International Airport and has been massively involved in destination marketing and bringing in new airlines to the Maldives to boost up the tourism industry. 


MACL has embarked on one of the biggest projects in the history of Maldives in developing the future Velana International Airport such as the development of a brand new international passenger terminal, a new code F runway, a new cargo terminal complex and a new fuel farm along with hydrant system and major infrastructure developments at Velana internationals Airport.
