the 2nd joint meeting on Mechanism to deal with issues of safety of Chinese tourists in the Maldives was conducted at Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort.

Maldives has earlier announced plans to launch an aggressive marketing campaign in China in a bid to attract at least one million Chinese tourists per year.

"China has been a very important market for the Maldives, although we have had some ups and downs in tourism arrivals. But overall we are gaining ground, and we have planned a lot of new activities for the Chinese market," Tourism minister Moosa Zameer said.

China has maintained its position as the single biggest source market despite falling numbers over the past year. In 2016, the Maldives welcomed 324,326 visitors from China, which was a 9.8 percent drop compared to the previous year. China has continued its downward spiral this year as well with a 9.5 percent drop in Chinese arrivals in March.

Mr. Zameer has also previously highlighted that the congestion at the country main international airport was a major obstacle to expand the tourism industry. However as a result of financial and infrastructural assistance from China, construction of a new runway which is expected to be completed by mid-2018 is currently underway at Velana International Airport.

Sheraton Maldives is located 15-20 minutes away from Velana International Airport by speedboat and 1 km away from the nearest inhabited island.

Featuring 7 dining outlets, a freshwater outdoor pool and yoga classes at the fitness centre Sheraton Maldives is truly an Island Haven.
